Cross-country runners are, by nature, a tough, resilient breed of athletes who will compete in about any weather on any terrain. And nearly 1,100 high school runners proved that Saturday on the rain-soaked Troy Howard Middle School course during the prestigious 10th annual Festival of Champions meet.

The event attracted more than 60 schools from several states and Canada and included 457 female finishers and 637 male finishers for 1,094 overall runners.

Heavy rain the night before and rain during parts of Saturday’s meet made for sloppy conditions — just the way most distance runners like it.

The meet was co-hosted by Belfast Area High School and Brewer High School.

The girls team championship came down to two talented, unbeaten Maine coastal squads, as Mount Desert Island finished first by 65 points over runner-up Camden Hills. In the boys meet, Falmouth held off J.H. Gillis of Antigonish Nova Scotia, Canada by 23 points.

Although the results for all runners were compiled together, there were six separate 3.1-mile (5-kilometer) races, including boys and girls freshmen, boys and girls unseeded and boys and girls seeded (for the top runners).

The girls team scores were: Mount Desert Island 104, Camden Hills 169, Falmouth 221, Brunswick 230, Harwood, Vt. 247, Mount Blue of Farmington 265, J.H. Gillis of Novia Scotia, Canada 275, John Bapst of Bangor 309, Hampden Academy 338, Waterville 378, Burrillville, R.I. 382, Caribou 390, Yarmouth 412, Brewer 434, Orono 446, Cumberland, R.I. 478, Maranacook of Readfield 485, South Portland 488, Lewiston 523, Winslow 557, Catherine McAuley of Portland 558, Ellsworth 563, Bangor 572, Kennebunk 578, Washburn 667, Monmouth Academy 719, Sanford 733, Lawrence of Fairfield 738, Madison 775, Boothbay Region 813, Medomak Valley 814, North Yarmouth Academy 827, Presque Isle 911, Hermon and Belfast 967, Edward Little of Auburn 1,002, Oxford Hills of South Paris 1,008, Old Town 1,097, Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln 1,176. Oceanside and North Haven, among others, also participated but did not have enough runners for a score.

The boys team scores were: Falmouth 136, J.H. Oceanside, among others, also participated but did not have enough runners for a score.

The top spot for teams in the girls meet came down to two of the most talented overall squads in the state and probably was a preview of the upcoming state Class B championship meet.

MDI finished first at 104, with a seven-runner total time of 1:45:10.46 and an average runner time of 21:02.10. Camden Hills finished second at 169, and a total time of 1:46:48.39 and average time of 21:21.68.

Ultimately, the difference between the squads was the Trojans’ top pack of runners compared to the Windjammers top two runners. Camden Hills placed two runners among the top 10, an impressive feat, but that was not enough. MDI had its five scoring runners in the 11th, 18th, 19th, 25th and 31st positions, while Camden Hills finished eighth, 10th, 40th, 49th and 62nd.
