Alfred C. Hopkins, 91, of Belfast died Monday, Oct. 10, 2011 at a Belfast nursing facility. He was born in Belfast on Aug. 20, 1920, the son of Charles and Lois Hopkins.

He was educated in Belfast schools and served in the U.S. Marines during World War II. In 1940 he married Dorothy W. (Melvin) Hopkins and was married to her until her death in 2006. Alfred worked for and retired from A&P Supermarket as a meat cutter, and after retirement, he worked for Swan Lake Grocery as a meat cutter.

He built his home, which he lived in until his death, for more than 50 years. He was both a rough and finish carpenter. He was a charter member (1952) of Northport VFW Post 6131. He was an avid Red Sox fan and enjoyed the Patriots; he was a true fan of all Boston sports teams. Alfred loved to follow his grandchildren’s sporting events, and spending time with his whole family bought him great joy.

He is survived by and will be sadly missed by his four children; Barry Hopkins and wife Beth of Belfast, Ellen Cummings and husband Tom of Quincy, Mass., Stephen Hopkins and wife Donna of Belmont and Scott Hopkins and wife Sarah of Searsport; several grandchildren; great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife Dorothy W. (Melvin) Hopkins; and one sister, Betty Johnson.

A graveside service with military honors will be held Saturday, Oct. 15 at 1 p.m. at Grove Cemetery Belfast. A reception will follow the service at Northport VFW Post 6131, located on Route 1.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Alfred’s memory may be made to Northport VFW Post 6131, in care of Don Ramsey, 282 Rocky Road Northport, ME 04849.
