Police have charged a Brooks man with theft after a Troy farmer set up a hidden camera to find out who had been stealing from her farm stand in recent months.

Police summoned 19-year-old Dakota Durand of Brooks for theft Monday, Oct. 17 after the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office received a complaint from a woman on Detroit Road, who said she had photos of a man stealing from her farm stand. According to Lt. Jason Trundy, the woman said the thefts had been ongoing over the last few months.

“They were losing money all summer long,” said Trundy, noting that the money went missing from a cash box that was left unattended at the farm stand for customers to pay on the honor system.

Trundy said the woman recently installed a hidden camera system in an effort to find out who might have been taking the cash.

By Monday morning, those efforts proved to be fruitful.

With the photos from the complainant in-hand, Trundy said, Deputy Darren Moody met with Sgt. Dale Brown in an effort to learn the identity of the man whose image was captured by the camera. Trundy said Brown lives in the vicinity of the complainant and is familiar with people in that area.

After speaking with Brown, Trundy said, Moody went to a residence in Brooks, where he spoke to a young man who identified himself as Durand. Moody recognized Durand as the person who was caught on film at the farm stand, Trundy said, both due to his physical appearance and his attire.

“Some of the clothing he was wearing matched the clothing that the person in the photograph was wearing,” said Trundy.

When presented with that information, Trundy said, Durand admitted to the officer that he was the person behind the farm stand thefts.

Moody later learned that there was a warrant out for Durand’s arrest on a criminal mischief charge. As a result, Durand was arrested and transported to the Waldo County Jail Tuesday, Oct. 18.

Durand is scheduled to appear at Fifth District Court in Belfast on the theft charge Tuesday, Dec. 20. Police records did not indicate a court date for the criminal mischief charge.
