Camden-Rockport Middle School and its top two runners — Jacqueline Russell and Eli Smith — ruled the Troy Howard Middle School trail Tuesday during the Busline League cross-country championship meet.

The event originally was to be held Oct. 14, but wet conditions forced the meet to be pushed to Oct. 18 at the same venue.

The wait did not stop the talented, deep Schooners of Camden-Rockport from dominating the meet, with Boothbay finishing second in both the boys and girls races.

Russell cruised to the girls individual title, while Smith was pushed a bit by teammate Ben Winchenbach in the boys race.

Next year, Russell could join an already loaded Camden Hills Regional High School girls cross-country team that is one of the most talented in the state, regardless of class.

On Tuesday, student-athletes in the boys and girls varsity races, which included each team’s top seven runners, crossed a 2.1-mile course. There also was a 1.6-mile mixed jayvee race.

The girls varsity team scores were: Camden-Rockport Middle School 39, Boothbay Elementary School 54, Medomak Middle School of Waldoboro 86, Lincolnville Central School 98, Searsport District Middle School 146, Oceanside Middle School of Rockland/Thomaston 172, Richmond Middle School 178, Troy Howard Middle School of Belfast 225, Appleton Central School 225 and Great Salt Bay of Damariscotta 249.

CRMS won by placing its five scoring runners among the top 16 runners. The Schooners finished with a seven-runner combined time of 1:18:46.98 and an average runner time of 15:45.40.

The boys varsity team scores were: Camden-Rockport 21, Boothbay 38, Troy Howard 70, Lincolnville 118, Medomak 143 and Oceanside, Searsport, Great Salt Bay, Appleton and Richmond no score.

CRMS placed its five scoring runners among the top seven and had a seven-runner time of 1:09:59.63 and average runner time of 13:59.93.

All told, 159 youngsters raced in Tuesday’s meet.
