Earl R. Shaw, 91, passed away Monday, Nov. 21, 2011, at Sebasticook Valley Hospital in Pittsfield following a brief illness. He was born in Littleton on May 20, 1920, the son of Herbert and Fern (Dickerson) Shaw.

He moved from Littleton to Freedom in 1939. Earl married the former Berdena Davis on Aug. 17, 1940, and shared 67 years of marriage. He was self employed with his wife for many years, operating a poultry farm in Unity. Earl served in the United States Army from 1942 to 1943.

He was an avid deer hunter for years and expanded to bobcat, coon and bear in the mid-1950s through 2000. His hunting partners included Herbert Ward, Clifton Burke, Harlan Bartlett, Sonny Wade and Larry Pottle. Their friendships and hunting experiences spanned many years and were the subjects for many stories. Earl enjoyed time spent in the woods cutting firewood and cedar used in his cedar post and shingle business.

He was predeceased by his wife; his parents; a son, Glen Shaw; sisters, Thelma Shaw, Nora White, Mildred Moody, and Doris “Peanut” Young; a brother, Roland Shaw; step-brothers, Ken Clark, Jack Clark, and Mel Clark; and a step-sister, Helen Clark.

Earl will be sadly missed by his two sons, Dale Shaw and his wife, Sharon of Unity, and Harold Shaw and his wife, Susan of Kewanee, Wis.; four grandchildren, Scott Shaw and his wife, Tammy, and Travis Shaw, all of Unity, and Timothy Shaw and his wife, Christi, and Michael Shaw and his wife, Jennifer, all of Kewanee, Wis.

He was blessed with seven great-grandchildren, Brooke, Kodi, Taylor, Camden, Teagen, Shawna and Kobe. Earl is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Respecting Earl’s wishes, there will be no visiting hours or funeral service. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 2 at Pond Cemetery in Unity.
