A 32-year-old woman was trapped inside her vehicle for a short time in the afternoon of Nov. 30 following a rollover accident on Route 1.

Searsport Police Chief Dick LaHaye said local ambulance personnel and firefighters used the Jaws of Life to remove Katie Tempesta-Fornier of Searsport from the 2005 Ford Expedition she was driving that crashed.

LaHaye said Tempesta-Fornier was traveling west on Route 1 when she crossed the center line for reasons that were unclear Dec. 1.

“She nearly hit three vehicles head on,” said LaHaye, adding that the crash remains under investigation.

LaHaye said Tempesta-Fornier continued traveling in the eastbound lane until she went off the road, striking and breaking off a utility pole. The impact with the pole caused the SUV to roll over, LaHaye said, after which it traveled about 36 feet down an embankment before coming to rest on the driver’s side.

Tempesta-Fornier complained of pain in her ribs and LaHaye said she had also stated at the scene that she had had previous problems with her back. She was transported via ambulance to Waldo County General Hospital in Belfast, and LaHaye said she has since been released.
