Clyde L. Ripley, 85, died on his birthday, Monday, Dec. 5, 2011, at Glenridge Rehabilitation & Nursing Care in Augusta, where he had been a resident for the past two years. He was born in Searsmont on Dec. 5, 1926, the son of Horace and Nina (Perry) Ripley, and attended school in Searsmont.

Clyde and Virginia were married on Dec. 31, 1947. They lived on Moody Mountain Road in Searsmont for the first 25 years of their marriage and then in Vassalboro for 28 years. Clyde then moved to Waterville where he lived until he became ill.

Clyde starting working at 14, first at Sprowl and then Robbins Lumber in Searsmont. He then found his true calling and became a tractor-trailer driver. His first job as a truck driver was for Flagg’s Trucking of Belfast and his last job was for Baker Commodities, Vassalboro. During that time Clyde worked for many different companies and made a great number of friends.

Clyde was still driving trucks to Massachusetts until 10 years ago when he decided it was time to retire. He learned the skill of cooper from his father and had presented barrels to each of children. Clyde attended church at Winslow Baptist Church and Cornerstone Christian Fellowship, Vassalboro.

He was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Viriginia Pendleton Ripley.

He is survived by his three children, his son, Richard and his wife, Rina, of Newcastle, his daughters, Linda Pressey and her husband, Raymond, of Waterville and Alicia Rogers of Augusta; and his grandchildren, Justin and Patricia Ann Ripley of Arlington, Va., Angelia and TJ Hickman of Waterville and Harry Rogers of Augusta.

He was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Norman.

The family would like to thank all the staff at Capitol City Manor and Glenridge for the excellent care and love that was given to Clyde in his last years.

Clyde requested no visiting hours. A celebration of his life will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, at Winslow Baptist Church, 1 Hopeful Drive, Winslow.

In lieu of flowers, friends who wish to may make donations in Clyde’s memory to the charity of their choice.
