Just a few days before the start of the regular season, the Mount Desert Island and host Belfast boys basketball squads battled on the hardwood Wednesday night to continue their preparation for what the Trojans and Lions hope are successful campaigns — that end in regional playoff berths.

After 32 minutes of competitive action Wednesday, the visitors held on for a 10-point victory, as MDI grabbed an early lead and rode out of town with a 48-38 decision.

For the Trojans, who led 12-6, 23-11 and 35-25 at the quarter breaks, Jayson Burke and Adam Gray both tallied nine points; Lu Barrett and Kyle Breaves, both six; Colin Mooers, five; Micah Welch, four; Abe Philbrook, three; and Jon Phelps, Nick Shaw and Caleb McDonald, all two. MDI made 8-of-14 free throws (57 percent).

For Belfast, Jamie Jackson dumped in 20 points; Yanni Rakis, six; Ryan Rice, four; Tyler Prescott and Larry Dyer, both three; and Ben Lowe and Scott Kulikowski, both one. The Lions netted 11-of-21 foul shots (57 percent).
