The Rockland and Georges Valley boys basketball teams lacked a great deal of depth on their respective benches last year, so conventional wisdom would suggest that combining the two programs would eliminate that problem.

That school of thought was confirmed Friday night at Belfast Area High School, where visiting Oceanside, the consolidation of the two aforementioned programs, outran the host Lions en route to a 71-45 victory.

Twelve of the 13 players that hit the court for the Mariners (2-1) wound up in the scoring column as the team’s fresh legs helped it sail past the Lions (0-2).

Both Oceanside and Belfast came out on fire offensively in the first quarter, with the visitors leading 22-20 after the first eight minutes. However, the Mariners slowly pulled away as the game wore on, extending their lead to 37-28 at halftime and 60-35 after three quarters.

Sophomore Isaiah Stone-Patterson was sensational Friday for the Mariners, pouring in 29 points, including canning seven 3-pointers and going 4-of-4 from the foul line. Sam Meklin added 16 points, while Shea Davenport contributed six; Tyler Gilson and David Harrison, both five; and Ben Wallace, Matt Zable, Dylan Maloney, Hunter Grindle and Bronson Philbrick, all two.

For the Lions, Tyler Prescott tallied 11 points, while Jamie Jackson added nine; Ryan Rice, eight; Scott Kulikowski, five; Stephen Paul and Emerson DellaMattera, both four; and Yanni Rakis and Ben Lowe, both two.

Oceanside netted 12-of-15 free throws (80 percent), while Belfast converted 9-of-15 (60 percent).

The Mariners extended their bench through much of the game and the Lions simply ran out of gas as the contest wore on, as Oceanside scored most of its points in bunches throughout the night. Stone-Patterson had 20 points in the first half, while Meklin poured in 10 points in the third quarter, in addition to two treys from Stone-Patterson as the visitors slowly pulled away.

Oceanside jayvees 55, Belfast 30 … Also at Belfast Friday, the Mariners went on a 20-5 run in the third quarter and pulled away from the host Lions. Oceanside led 12-8, 15-14 and 35-19 at the quarter breaks.

For Belfast, Korey Doolan compiled six points, while Levi Lapham and Mike Reynolds each added five; Greg Clark four; Tyler Tran, three; Marcus Riley, Asa Lewis and Matt Smith, all two; and Zavier Roman, one.

The Mariners were 4-of-13 (31 percent) from the foul line and the Lions 7-of-22 (32 percent).
