Robert Dodd, 81, died Friday, Dec. 16, 2011, at Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport, after a long illness.

Born in Swampscott, Mass., on Nov. 23, 1930, he was the son of Frederic N. and Helen D. Hemeon Dodd. Throughout his youth, Robert lived in Lynn and Springfield, Mass., where he graduated from Springfield Technical High School.

In 1952, he graduated from the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, N.Y.

Mr. Dodd was a commissioned officer in the Naval Reserve who served on active duty on a destroyer in the Korean Theater of Operations during the Korean War.

Robert served in the Merchant Marines as Second Officer on several container ships, primarily for Sealand Corporation.

He enjoyed many summers in Maine at his camp on Pitcher Pond in Northport.

He was an Honored Elder in the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians of Oregon, having descended from the Chetco Tribe.

Other than his parents, Mr. Dodd was predeceased by two brothers, Frederic Dodd of Agawam, Mass., and Ronald Dodd of Morrill. He is survived by one daughter, Joanna Dodd of Feeding Hills, Mass.; a brother, David Dodd and his wife, Caroline, of Morrill; two sisters-in-law, Lotte Dodd of Camden and Dolores Dodd of Windsor, Conn.; as well as many special cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
