The weather throughout the Midcoast has been unseasonably warm as Christmas rapidly approaches, but the temperature was chilly enough for high school ice hockey inside the confines of the Midcoast Recreation Center Dec. 20 as the Midcoast Ice Cats took on Lewiston in their final game before the holiday break.

The Ice Cats, a cooperative club squad made up of players from Knox, Waldo and Lincoln counties, played “very well against one of the best jayvee teams in the state,” said coach Mike Schroeder, but ultimately were downed by the visiting Blue Devils 2-0.

Schroeder praised the play of Ice Cats goalie Parker Spear in net, as the senior was peppered by shots the entire game and turned away in an incredible 53-of-55 shots in the loss.

The game was scoreless in the first period before the Blue Devils scored in the second and added an insurance power-play goal in the third.

“I was extremely pleased with the way we played today,” said Schroeder. “Our ‘compete level’ was extremely high and our players never gave up. We can take a number of positives from today’s game: we are a young team and we battled for three periods against an opponent that traditionally is one of the best ice hockey programs in the state.”
