The Belfast Area High School field hockey team not only emerged from the season as state Class B champions in 2011, but also had three of its players honored Dec. 4 at the Maine Field Hockey All-State dinner banquet.

Seniors Brooklyn Curry, Britt Mellor and Julia Ward were honored at the banquet, hosted by the Maine Field Hockey Association, at the Augusta Civic Center. All three were integral parts of the Lions’ success this season en route to the state crown.

Curry, a defender, notched seven goals and two assists. She also was 2-of-3 on penalty strokes and had seven defensive clears.

Mellor, a defender, had four goals and an assist, was 2-of-2 on penalty strokes and had five defensive clears.

Ward, a goalie, played well in the regular season and stepped her game up in the postseason, allowing only two goals through four playoff games. Ward allowed eight goals all year, sported a goals-against average of .444 and saved 65-of-73 shots for an impressive .890 save percentage.

In the Eastern Class B tournament, No. 3 Belfast defeated No. 6 Foxcroft Academy of Dover-Foxcroft 1-0 in the quarterfinals after 20 rounds of penalty corners and upended No. 2 John Bapst of Bangor 2-1 in the semifinals before knocking off unbeaten, top-seeded Nokomis of Newport in the regional final 1-0 in double-overtime.

The Lions then earned a 2-1 win over Western Class B champion York to win the state crown.
