Coming off a 32-point loss at the hands of Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln a few days prior, the Searsport boys basketball team was looking to bounce back and shooting for its first win of the season Dec. 22 — three days before Christmas — as the Vikings hosted visiting Penobscot Valley of Milo.

Well, the Vikings earned the holiday present they wished for in a 41-39 victory over the Howlers.

The game proved tight from the opening tip to the final buzzer, but, in the end, it was the Vikings who secured their first win.

Penobscot Valley led 12-9 after the first quarter, while the teams were knotted 18-18 at halftime and 29-29 after three quarters.

Milton Jones tallied a game-high 13 points to lead Searsport, while Dillan Moody added seven; Buddy Ellis and Shane Seekins, both six; Austin Bean, four; Darren Harriman, three; and Jake Powell, two.

For the Howlers, Logan Jipson and Robbie Hallet each tossed in 12 points, while Wyatt Foster, Wade Thurlow and Griffin Libby each added five.

“[It’s] great for us to get our first win of the season,” said Searsport coach Brad Cook. “The guys were excited and it gives us confidence to build on.”

The Vikings will look to make it two in a row on Tuesday, Dec. 27 when they travel to Bucksport to take on the Golden Bucks.

In the Maine Principals’ Association Heal Point Standings for Eastern Class C, Searsport (1-3, 0.9259 points) is 14th, while Sumner of East Sullivan (7-0, 10.9877 points) is first in the 17-team region. The top 11 teams qualify for the playoffs.
