Thomas Ware Wight, 85, of Boulder, Colo., died Saturday, Dec. 24, 2011 at the HospiceCare Center in Louisville, Colo.

Thomas was born Sept. 14, 1926 to Roy and Ella (Cobb) Wight in Belfast. A graduate of the University of Maine (Bachelor of Science, Master of Education), Thomas served in the United States Navy during World War II and in the United States Army in the Korean conflict.

He taught high school physics for many years in Haverhill, Mass. Along with being an original contributor to the Physical Science Study Committee, which revolutionized the teaching of physics at the high school level, he also earned a National Science Foundation Academic Year at Harvard University and was the recipient of a Fulbright Fellowship to teach in Izmir, Turkey.

A longtime resident of Groveland, Mass., Thomas was most at home in his garden or vacationing with his family and friends, camping, canoeing, hiking and bicycling.

Thomas is survived by his wife of 57 years, Virginia (Noel) Wight, of Boulder, Colo.; six children: John Wight of Doylestown, Pa., Ellen Wight of Haverhill, Mass., Margaret Holloway of Carson City, Nev., Matthew Wight of Boulder, Colo., Ruth Wight of Boulder, Colo. and Hugh Wight of Sudbury, Mass.; and 10 grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at the Universalist Unitarian Church in Haverhill, Mass. in the summer of 2012.
