The Mount View Middle School seventh- and eighth-grade boys basketball squads had their hands full Jan 9 in a pair of home contests, hosting Messalonskee of Oakland in hopes of coming away with a sweep of the visitors.

In the end, the Waldo County squads were forced to settle for a split, with the surging Mustang seventh-graders earning a 40-34 win and the Mustang eighth-graders falling 46-37.

MVMS teams participate in the Central Maine League, which also has squads from Messalonskee of Oakland, Lawrence of Fairfield, Mount Blue of Farmington, Waterville, Winslow, Skowhegan and Warsaw of Pittsfield.

The eighth-grade Mustangs are 4-4 on the season, while the seventh-grade Mustangs are 7-1.

The following is a recap of results from Monday’s games:

Mount View 7th 40, Messalonskee 34 … At Thorndike Jan. 6, the Mustangs avenged their lone loss of the season with a six-point win over the Eagles. Messalonskee defeated Mount View 47-42 Nov. 30.

On Monday, Colby Furrow netted 14 points to lead Mount View, while Emmett Shell added 10; Devon Davis, seven; Kalvin Croteau, four; Brandon Reynolds and Joey Danna, both two; and Kevin Richards, one.

Mount View shot 8-of-22 from the foul line, including 4-of-4 (100 percent) from Shell, 3-of-11 (27 percent) from Davis and 1-of-2 (50 percent) from Richards.

Mustang coach Chad Larrabee said he is thrilled with his team’s progress this season, stating that the players “are willing to work hard, and they bring a bunch of enthusiasm to the gym every day.”

“The boys have started to gel together as a team, and because of that the team is playing better basketball as of late,” he said. “As a coach it has been a pleasure to watch this growth. The great thing about this group is that they have had a lot of fun playing basketball this year, they have learned some life lessons along the way, and they realize that they need to continue to work hard to get ready to play at the next level. I really look forward to watching this group play in the years to come.”

Messalonskee 8th 46, Mount View 37 … At Thorndike Jan. 6, the visiting Eagles distanced themselves from the host Mustangs late in the fourth quarter and prevailed by nine points. Mount View led 14-6 after the first quarter, while Messalonskee took a 22-18 halftime lead and led 33-30 after three quarters.

Justin Lizotte tallied 14 points for the Mustangs, while Mikey Hustus added 11; Trevor Saucier, six; and Gavin Simpson, Tyler Ripley and Brandon Gillman, all two.

For the Eagles, Jonathan Wilke netted 16 points, while Brice Eldridge added seven; Taylor Turner, six; Josh Genness and James Lathrop, both four; Jack Bernatchez and Conner Garland, both two; and Carson Bessey, Sawyer Michaud and Riley Campbell, all one.

Mount View tallied 8-of-13 (61 percent) from the foul line, while Messalonskee converted 9-of-22 (41 percent).
