In response to the growing need for information concerning the drug “bath salts,” Healthy Waldo County, a local Healthy Maine Partnership, in association with the Waldo County Sheriff’s Department, invites the community to attend a Bath Salts Forum at the Belfast Free Library on Jan. 26, from 6:30-8:00 p.m.

The featured speaker will be Sgt. Jim Greeley, Drug Recognition Expert, who will be presenting signs and symptoms of bath salt ingestion as well as sharing his expertise in recognizing the drug itself. Q&A discussion will follow.

This public forum will offer area residents and employees an opportunity to learn about this synthesized drug and its effect on users and the community.

Police and hospitals across Maine have reported a sharp increase in the use of “bath salts,” the street name for a group of dangerous synthetic stimulants. The Northern New England Poison Control Center received 110 calls about bath salts — 87 from Maine — between January and July of 2011, compared to just one call in 2010.
