The National Weather Service issued a winter weather message at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11, and its forecast said 4 to 8 inches of snow is possible for Thursday.

A winter storm watch is in effect from late Wednesday night through Thursday evening.

A gale warning has been issued for the entire northern coastal area — from Portsmouth, N.H., to Down East — through 7 p.m. Thursday.

The National Weather Service said: “Low pressure will track into the Midwest…as a second area of low pressure tries to develop along the southern New England coast. Precipitation will start as snow for most of the region…before warm air aloft creates a wintry mix along the coast and immediate interior. Slight changes to the track and strength could yield significant difference in precipitation type at this time. However…confidence is increasing in a plowable snowfall along the foothills and interior…with some sleet and freezing rain possible closer to the coast. As snow winds down Thursday evening…freezing drizzle will likely develop across much of the area as well.”

The Waldo County forecast for the next few days follows.
