Chester “Chet” Gilbert Hammond Jr., 78, died Jan. 16, 2012 at Maine General Medical Center — Thayer Unit in Waterville. He was born in Milford, Mass. on Dec. 10, 1933, the son of Chester Gilbert and Florabelle (Eaton) Hammond.

He met and married the love of his life, Camilla Lydiard, May 21, 1955 in Peterborough, England. Chester was a veteran and served in the U.S. Air Force for 26 years and was employed by the U.S. Post Office for 15 years.

Through the years he had many interests and hobbies including hunting, fishing, camping, four-wheeling and the challenge of putting together jigsaw puzzles. He was an active member of the American Legion Benjamin Berry Post #50.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Camilla, of Winslow; a daughter, Sharon L. Randall and her husband Cliff of South China; grandson, Ryan D. Allen of South China and his special friend, Heather Dyer of Albion; great-granddaughter, Ava M. Allen of Albion; grandson Kyle R. Allen of South China; brother-in-law, Raymond Lydiard and his wife Diana of England; brother-in-law, Philip Lydiard and his wife Ann of England; goddaughter, Julie Tegue of Texas; nieces, nephews, several great nieces and nephews; special cousins Valerie and David Barham of England; special friends, Jim and Wonda Johann and family of Texas, Bill and Carol Cobb and family of Texas, Steve and Barrie Fernald and family of Troy, Dick and Mary Shibles of Benton, Roger and Jean Thompson of Pittsfield, June Jarvis of England, Renee and George Woods of England and all the special neighbors of Heartland Estates.

Chester was predeceased by his parents, Chester and Florabelle Hammond, and a son, David Hammond.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to all the doctors, nurses, and staff on 2 Central at Maine General Medical Center — Thayer Unit for their compassionate care and support.

A graveside service will be held in the spring at the Maine Veteran’s Cemetery in Augusta.
