Recently, the American Legion and AMVETS posts in Belfast and the American Legion Post in Palermo have been involved with helping Jeremy Gilley, a veteran from Palermo who recently lost both of his legs in an accident that occurred while he had stopped to help victims of another car accident.

In January, the Home Depot in Waterville contacted the family offering to send representatives from the store to Palermo and take a look at what needs to be done to retrofit Gilley’s home, and on Jan. 30, Store Manager Scott Lowery and Garrett Glidden, a contractor for Home Depot, visited the Gilley residence to begin the project.

Habitat for Humanity has also since become involved with helping the family in their transition.

For anyone else interested in helping the family, a benefit spaghetti supper and raffle will be held Sunday, Feb. 12 from 5-7 p.m. at the Palermo Consolidated School, located at 501 Route 3 in Palermo.

Another benefit will be held Saturday, Feb. 25 from 5-7 p.m. at the Belfast American Legion, located at 143 High St. It will be a potluck supper, and there will be another raffle, too.

Those interested in donating items for the raffles, making a monetary donation for the family or donating food for the potluck can contact Jackie Martin, Post 43 adjutant and commander of AMVETS Post 6829, by phone at 505-1131 or by email at
