A 75-year-old man from Unity died Saturday as the result of injuries he sustained when a large branch fell on him while he was cutting wood in Thorndike.

Waldo County Chief Deputy Jeff Trafton said Clair Lewis, 75, of Unity was cutting wood alone on a lot he owned on Parsons Valley Road in Thorndike Saturday morning when he ran into trouble.

“He had cut one tree and it got caught up in another one,” said Trafton. “When he cut the second one, the one he cut first ended up falling on him.”

Trafton said Lewis was able to call for help minutes after the accident occurred.

“I understand he called his wife,” said Trafton.

Lewis’ wife then called more people to come and help her husband, and Trafton said they called 911 while on the way to find Lewis.

Deputy Gerry Lincoln and Detective Jason Bosco responded to the call, as did the Unity Volunteer Ambulance Corps. Lewis was taken to Thayer Hospital in Waterville, where Trafton said he died as a result of his injuries.

Trafton said he’d known Lewis for years, and was saddened to learn of the man’s death.

“He was a very nice man,” said Trafton of Lewis.
