It could be the start of a new tradition this weekend as the first annual Tanglewood 5-Kilometer Snowshoe Race will be on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 1 p.m. at Tanglewood 4-H Camp.

With the lack of snow, event coordinators plan to turn the event to a winter 5k run should conditions not permit snowshoes. The race trail includes woodsy, hilly terrain and a view of the Ducktrap River.

Registration for the event is $25 and is open to anyone ages 13 and older. The registration fee includes hot soup, cookies, hot chocolate and coffee. Prizes also be awarded to the top three finishers.

There also will be a 500-yard snowshoe dash available for children ages 12 and younger. Each participant also will need to sign a liability waiver prior to the race. Registration can be done online or on the day of the race.

The event is a fundraiser for restoration of the original historic field stone fireplace and chimney in the main lodge.
