It turns out that Waldo County is home to the state’s fastest 200-meter runner and three New England indoor track qualifiers.

That was determined Monday at the state Class B championships at Bates College, while Belfast’s Jacob Campbell and Kelsey Grass, along with Mount View’s Curtis Griffin, turned in sensational performances, to lead a contingent of Waldo County high school student-athletes.

Lion Campbell won the state 200-meter title, while Campbell (55 and 200 meters), Griffin (55 meters) and Grass (800 meters) qualified for the 24th annual New England Interscholastic Indoor Track-and-Field Championships on Friday, March 2 at 5 p.m. at the Reggie Lewis Track And Athletic Center of Roxbury Community College in Roxbury, Mass.

The Class A and B champion in each event qualify for New Englands, along with the athletes with the next four best distances, times or heights, regardless of class affiliation.

The times recorded by Campbell, Griffin and Grass placed them among the top six overall, regardless of class, in their events.
