Frederick Eugene Leadbetter Sr. of Chestertown, Md. passed away on Monday, Feb. 20, 2012 at his home. He was 77.

Mr. Leadbetter was born on April 24, 1934 in Lincolnville. He was the first of seven children born to the late Norman Eugene and Mildred Geneva Porter Leadbetter. He graduated from Crosby High School in Belfast in 1951. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education and a Master of Arts in administration and supervision from East Carolina University and worked 30 hours toward a doctorate.

In 1967, he married Ann Craft in Centreville, Md. They lived in Centreville, where he served as a teacher at Centreville Elementary School for seven years and principal for 15 years, and at Church Hill for 13 years. He and his family moved to Chestertown, Md. in 1982.

Mr. Leadbetter retired in 1996. He was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church where he served as an usher and as delegate to the diocese of Easton. Mr. Leadbetter was also a member of the Retired Teachers Association, Maryland Retired School Personnel Association and QARSPS and was a life member of the Maryland PTA.

He was also a member of the Founders and Patriots of America, Sons and Daughters of the Pilgrims, John Paul Jones Chapter of MSSAR. He was a stamp collector, and loved gardening and listening to music.

Mr. Leadbetter is survived by his son, Frederick Leadbetter Jr. of Chestertown, Md.; three sisters, Trixie Jewell, Lorraine Erskin and Helen Beckett, all of Maine; and one brother, John Leadbetter of Maine.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 28 at 11 a.m. at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 101 North Cross Street, Chestertown, Md. Relatives and friends may call on Monday, Feb. 27, between the hours of 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, 130 Speer Road, Chestertown, Md. Interment will be in Church Hill Cemetery following the service.
