Historically, the Belfast wrestling squad has been one of the most successful in Class B, winning a bundle of league, regional and state crowns.

However, this winter, qualifying only six athletes for the state Class B championship meet Feb. 18 at Fryeburg Academy essentially put the Lions out of the running for team title consideration and instead forced the BAHS wrestlers to focus on finishing their respective seasons strong.

At the states, Belfast scored 55 points to place ninth among 16 scoring teams. Camden Hills, who, along with Belfast, annually contends for conference, regional and state crowns, won the this year’s title with 169 points.

The Lions crowned an individual champion in junior Brent Waterman in the 132-pound weight class. Belfast also received a second-place finish from senior Evan Drinkwater (113) and a third-place finish from junior Peter Kelley (195).

The individual state champions in Classes A, B and C, who include Lion Brent Waterman, qualify for the New England championships, to be contested on Friday and Saturday, March 2-3 at the Providence Career and Technical Center in Providence, R.I.
