Rock City Café’s Velvet Lounge series planned to open March with a lineup of jazz and standards, but the in-like-a-lion weather had other plans. The Thursday, March 1 gig by the every-other-week Bill Barnes Jazz Trio has been canceled, because Rock City closed early.

On Friday, March 2 the Velvet Lounge hosts Anne Delaney, who learned the great standards of the 1920s to ’50s on piano when she was 12 and starting singing them in public in her mid-20s. She has worked with jazz trios, quartets, big bands and, most recently, the Novel Jazz Septet. Her influences include Sarah Vaughan, Irene Kral and Johnny Hartman.

On Saturday, March 3 Tango — the vocal/piano duo of Kristen Burkholder and Martin Gottlieb — returns with their ongoing exploration of the Great American Songbook. With warmth, understanding, style and humor, Tango brings the songs from days gone by back to life.

The live music runs from 7 to 9 p.m. at the downtown club, 316 Main St. As usual there is no cover charge; however, tipping the musicians is highly encouraged. For more information on this and other events happening at the coffeebar/cafe, call 594-4123.
