In the end, Mother Nature would not cooperate, thus the Mike Sabins Memorial Youth Fish & Game Association “Hooked on Fishing” ice fishing event, sponsored by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, and scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 25 on Seven Tree Pond at Ayer Park, off Rt. 235, has been canceled.

Due to “unreliable ice conditions,” the event has been canceled. “We regret missing the opportunity to share ice fishing with so many, but safety must be first,” said Don Kleiner of Union, one of the event’s organizers.

Instruction, equipment and refreshments always are provided at the event. There was no fee to attend or participate.

The next Sabins’ event will be an open water event on June 2 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the same location.

For more information, call organizers Scot and Mary Sabins at 785-4076. The event is held in memory of their son, Mike, who had a passion for the outdoors. Mike died several years ago in a motorcycle accident.
