The Belfast boys sixth-grade basketball travel team won the Hampden Broncos fifth/sixth-grade tournament Feb. 26. The two-day event was played Feb. 25-26.

The eight-player Belfast squad won six games to finish as unbeaten champions.

Team members include Stanley Sturgis, Sam Goguen, Ricky Smith, Tyler Bartlett, Aaron Fuller, Conner Kneeland, Skylar Perkins, Dakoda Doolan and Nicholas Salvatore, who was unable to attend the tourney. The coaches are Stan Sturgis Sr. and Penson Bartlett.

On Feb. 25, Belfast participated in the round robin portion of the event, beating Dexter, Mount View 2 and Hampden.

Feb. 26 was the single-elimination portion of the tourney. Belfast received a first-round bye and then beat Holden 54-21 to advance to the semifinals against Houlton. Belfast also won that game 56-22.

That victory pushed Belfast into the championship game against Hampden, which the Waldo County squad won 53-36.

The scorers for Belfast in the championship were Goguen with 16 points; Sturgis, 11; Bartlett, seven; Doolan and Perkins, both six; Kneeland, four; Fuller, two; and Smith, one.
