The Belfast Area High School junior varsity girls basketball team may have experienced a tough season recordwise, but the young Lion student-athletes left all their effort on the court during the 2011-12 season.

Despite compiling a 1-14 record on the hardwood over the winter, the Lions “worked hard all season and improved our skills,” said coach Rob Powell.

Team members included Brogan Leppanen, Alli DellaMattera, Kaitlin Goslant, Killyan Richards, Sam Moores, Brianna Flagg, Maddie Littlefield, Ashley Littlefield, Kristine Mehuren and Hannah Bailey.

Belfast average 21.7 points this season and picked up a 29-16 win over Lincoln Academy of Newcastle in its lone victory.

Other season highlights included netting 11-of-12 free throws in a game against Gardiner and scoring a season-high 43 points against Oceanside of Rockland.

Flagg (4.4 points per game), Bailey (4.3) and Maddie Littlefield (2.4) led the Belfast offense, while DellaMattera (4 rebounds per game), Goslant (3.1) and Mehuren (2.2) controlled the glass. Flagg also averaged two assists, while Leppanen had 1.2 assists per game and Richards one assist a game.
