The Midcoast is rich in sporting traditions and another began March 11 in Lincolnville in the form of the Midcoast Half-Marathon.

The first annual event attracted 162 runners — 156 individuals and three two-person relay teams — who pounded the pavement in the 13.1-mile road race, which also featured family entertainment, music and a wine tasting.

The 13.1-mile road race began at the Cellardoor Winery on the Youngtown Road, onto Route 173 to Lincolnville Center before hitting Route 52. The course continued to the Slab City Road and wrapped back around to Youngtown Road to the finish.

Xiao Wang of New York City finished first with a time of 1:17.57, while Rockland District High School graduate and Old Town resident Eric Mauricette was second in 1:18.10. Mauricette was the overall winner of the first annual Blueberry Cove 13.1-mile race in August (that event will return this summer in Tenants Harbor).

Midcoast Half-Marathon co-director Andrew Stewart said, “It was definitely exactly what we were looking for” in reference to the event. Stewart also said there were many compliments about the challenge of the course.

“It’s a fun course,” he said. “You’ve got a couple really nice hills and then you have a nice gradual downhill over on Slab City [Road],” he said. “The goal was to, in some way, simulate what it would be like to run the Boston Marathon with the similar terrain. Lots of downhill and uphill to make it more variable than just a flat race.”

Stewart said prior to the race he hoped runners would use the half-marathon as a warmup for the Boston Marathon, which will hold its 116th annual running April 13.

In the Midcoast Half-Marathon, cash prizes were awarded to the top three male and female finishers in addition to prizes from Maine Sport for the top finishers. Stewart also thanked the Cellardoor Winery for the use of its venue for the event.
