A mild winter and unseasonably recent warm temperatures have enabled golfers to dust off their clubs in anticipation of the season.

And thanks to two Waldo County courses, those yearning to hit the links did not have to wait long to tee off.

Searsport Pines Golf Course opened March 17, according to owner Sue Prisco, with many taking advantage of the warm temperatures that at one point hit 80 degrees before once again cooling off to more realistic early-spring temperatures.

“We were very busy that [first] weekend,” she said. “But it’s been cold here lately at like 31 degrees. We’ve had golfers, but lately very few. A few brave souls here and there.”

Golf carts were not, at one recent point, allowed on the course with more moisture in the ground due to the recent rain and snow, said Prisco, but she plans to allow them “as soon as possible.”

“The course came out of the winter pretty good,” she said. “It’s spring conditions. Everyone is just happy to be out there playing.”

Early season rates at Searsport Pines are $15, without a cart, for nine holes and $25, without a cart, for 18 holes. Once carts are permitted, the rates with carts will be $24 for nine holes and $36 for 18 holes. The driving range also is open in addition to The Grille for food and beverages.

The rates will go up $5 in May once course conditions improve.

Searsport Pines also offers the bonus 10-play pass through April 30, which gives players 11 nine-hole rounds for the price of nine. Starting May 1, the regular 10-play pass (10 nine-hole rounds for the price of nine) will be available.

A 2013 season membership also will be given away later this season in a member/guest tournament. All current 2012 members automatically are entered to win.

Country View Golf Club in Brooks also opened March 22 and saw a steady first weekend of golfers.

Country View, which also features a driving range, has rates of $15, without a cart, for nine holes or $23, with a cart, for nine holes, or $25 for 18 holes and $38 with a cart.

Northport Golf Club is set to open Sunday, April 15. Attempts to reach a representative from Northport Golf Club were unsuccessful.
