When summer rolls around in Belfast, the one thing people can count on is the unpredictability of what will decorate the city’s sidewalks and parks. The Our Town Belfast Design Committee is looking for artists, painters, carpenters, welders, handy-doers and creative thinkers to submit their designs for this year’s “Please, Be Seated” street art project.

Those interested in submitting a design should send email to project coordinator Elaine Bielenberg, requesting design guidelines and the application form, at pleasebeseated2012@gmail.com. Seating concept drawings should include as much detail as possible, including a description of materials to be used and overall dimensions. Deadline for submission is Wednesday, April 25. Designs should be sent to Our Town Belfast, P.O. Box 19, Belfast, ME 04915; or dropped off at the OTB office at 171 High St., in the High Street Mini Mall Suite No. 6.

This year’s stipends are the same as last year’s: $250 for a single seat, $500 for a bench or multiple seat arrangement (no matter how many people work on it). The most important factor in a design is safety. Designs should not have small parts, protruding elements, trip factors, unstable or imbalanced designs; and they should hold up in all kinds of weather.

All designs will be reviewed by the committee for artistic merit and appropriateness for display in the public forum. The creators, whose designs are chosen, will be expected to maintain their projects throughout the summer if repairs or replacement is deemed necessary, even though they become the property of the City of Belfast for insurance purposes upon installation, beginning the week of June 11.

Our Town Belfast is a vibrant and inclusive social, arts and cultural effort that initiates and supports community and creative sustainability in downtown Belfast. For happenings, visit ourtownbelfast.org.
