Belfast Historical Society and Museum will present a program on “Remarkable Shipwrecks of New England,” Monday, April 23, 7 p.m. at Belfast Free Library in the Abbott Room. Marine journalist and historian Jon Johansen of Winterport will discuss New England shipwrecks that occurred between New York Harbor and the Canadian Maritimes. Covering a period from 1836 to 1956, the program will include the loss of the circus ship Royal Tar and the SS Andrea Doria. Johansen is the publisher of Maine Coastal News, a monthly publication dedicated to covering the waterfront of the state of Maine. He has a lifelong interest in shipwrecks and maritime history.

Belfast Historical Society meetings are free and open to the public and take place the fourth Monday of each month, April through October. Those unable to attend the program are invited to tune in to “Window on History” on BCTV-2 at 7 p.m. Tuesdays, 9:30 a.m. Thursdays and 4:30 p.m. Saturdays. The film may also be seen on the museum website, belfastmuseum.org, which offers new programs each month.
