On April 10, 11 students from Maine School of Science and Mathematics participated in the 36th annual Maine State Math Meet.

MSSM achieved the highest total score of 743 points and won the overall and Class A finals. They were followed closely by Fryeburg Academy with 727 and Hebron Academy with a total score of 635. There were 93 Maine high schools participating in the meet and approximately 950 students vying for the win. The MSSM math team has garnered the Maine State Math Meet title two years running.

The MSSM students who belong to the math team are: Kevin McDonough of Scarborough, Rachel Olugbemi of Presque Isle, Thomas Murphy of Rockport, Braeden Benedix of Kennebunk, Roger Van Peski of Northport, MinKyu Kim of Daejeon, South Korea, Klaas Pruiksma of Lewiston, James Jelin of Kennebunkport, Trevor Quigley of Moody, Wesley Zeng of Presque Isle and Joelle Dionne of Madawaska.

“I certainly enjoyed participating in the state math meet this year. Last year I did not qualify, so this was my first time,” said Olugbemi. “I got to represent MSSM in a large event, with hundreds of other mathematically inclined youth. The thrill of competition and victory was astounding, and so was the thought that, through teamwork and cooperation, we had excelled. This was an experience that I happily hope to repeat next year.”

Their coaches included MSSM Mathematics Department Chairman Pete Pedersen, Mathematics Instructor Jessica McGreevy, Interim Mathematics Instructor Kevin Joyce and MSSM Executive Director Luke Shorty.

“We set a high standard for our math team for this competition. Even though they are an incredibly busy group of kids they met our challenge with enthusiasm and we are so impressed by their achievement,” said Pedersen. “They truly are a focused, hardworking and committed group of young people.”

Opened in 1995, MSSM is a tuition-free public boarding high school that enrolls students from around the state. In September 2011, US News & World Report ranked it the 14th best math and science high school in the nation, and the top in New England. Their next open house is May 6 and 7.
