Area police departments are preparing for the spring drug take-back day, which will take place Saturday, April 28.

Unused and expired prescription medications will be collected at Belfast Police Department on Church Street in Belfast, Lincolnville Town Office on Hope Road in Lincolnville and Searsport Police Department on Union Street in Searsport. Police officers will be on hand for the events, which will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The drug take-back days are part of a nationwide effort that is coordinated through the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

According to information provided by Belfast Police Department, last October’s National Drug Take-Back Day resulted in the collection of 14,140 pounds of pills, and Maine residents brought in more expired or unused drugs per capita out of all Americans.

Hypodermic needles will not be accepted at the drop-off sites because police have no safe way of disposing of those items. Any liquids that are dropped off must be in sealed containers.
