The high school baseball and softball seasons got underway April 16 for Searsport District High School as the Vikings hit the road to face Bucksport, which has moved down to Class C from Class B.

Unfortunately for both Viking squads, their respective contests did not take long.

The SDHS softball team mustered only one hit against the Golden Bucks, winners of the Eastern Class B title a year ago, and dropped a 19-0 decision, 5-inning decision to the hosts.

The Viking baseball team did not fare much better, coming up short in a 13-3 loss, also in five innings. Bucksport was no slouch last year in Class B, as the Golden Bucks advanced to the regional final before falling to eventual state champion Waterville.

In Monday’s softball game, Bucksport tallied 16 runs in the first inning thanks to a slew of Golden Buck hits and Viking fielding miscues. With the game out of reach, the Golden Bucks laid down bunts throughout the remainder of the contest in an effort to get in infield work.

Gwen Higgins had the lone hit for Searsport, while Sadie Wight (double, 2 singles, 3 RBIs) and Brie Bires (triple, 2 singles, 3 RBIs), Jen Wight (3 singles) and Alanna Davis (2 singles) paced Bucksport.

Allison Walker and Higgins both pitched for the Vikings, while Cassidy Adams and Wight pitched for the Golden Bucks.

In the baseball game, Searsport struck first with two runs in the top of the third inning, but it was Bucksport that struck often in the bottom of the frame — to the tune of 11 runs — to put the game out of reach. The Vikings added another tally in the fourth stanza, but the Golden Bucks scored twice in the bottom of the fifth, to put the 10-run, game-ending mercy rule in effect.

Zach Beaudry doubled and added two singles to lead the Vikings, while Mike Cummings (double, single, 5 RBIs) and Tyler Maguire (2 singles, 4 runs) paced the Golden Bucks.
