The Unity College Spring 5-Kilometer Road Race is billed as one of the state’s fastest 3.1-mile races. And on April 21, it certainly was that for several runners, including the top two, who blitzed the course with remarkable paces.

Adam Goode, 28, and Judson Cake, 34, battled across the course, with Goode finishing the 5K in an impressive 15 minutes (less than a 5-minute mile pace), with Cake ending 10 seconds behind at 15;10.

Third-place finisher Kevin “Gus” Petrak would have won most 5K races with his solid time of 16:56.

Laura Woodbury, 47, was the first female finisher in 21:41. She was 16th among 56 participants.

The first woman to actually cross the course was Alison Zukas, 22, in 20:26. She rode a unicycle.

The 30th annual running of the event took place on the college campus. The course, which started from the gymnasium and then down a starting hill, wound through the village of Unity.

The event was co-sponsored by the Central Maine Striders Running Club.

The race coincided with the college’s Earth Day celebration.

The first Unity College student finishers were Godaire and Manchacos.
