Opening Day certainly proved one to remember for young Stanley Sturgis Jr.

Pitching for the Giants of the Belfast-Nortport Swanville Cal Ripken Baseball League, Sturgis tossed a perfect game to kick off the season in a 16-0, 5-inning victory over the Tigers at Walsh Field April 21.

The 12-year-old Sturgis threw only 55 pitches through five innings, striking out 11 batters.

A perfect game constitutes a pitcher retiring every batter they face while also allowing no walks. Doing so while also walking batters would constitute a no-hitter.

According to the youngster’s father and coach Stan Sturgis, “Stanley was proud of himself for his accomplishment but also very proud of his team for helping him succeed in pitching the perfect game.”

Additional Tiger team members include Tyler Bartlett, Dakota Payson, Rudi Schnetzer, Jason Bartlett, Zac Sheafe, Brendon Bruns, Ryder Wagenkknecht, Jacob Mills-Lightner, Wendell Grotton, Sammy Davis and Conner Gould. The team is managed by Sturgis and coached by Penson Bartlett and Kurt Payson.
