Police say a Searsport man was lucky to have survived, let alone escape uninjured, when his vehicle rolled over after he swerved to avoid hitting a cat on Frankfort Road, Thursday afternoon.

The driver and lone occupant of the late model Subaru, 77-year-old James Barclay of Searsport, said he was traveling along Frankfort Road when the animal ran into his path.

“I tried to dodge a flash of a cat,” said Barclay at the scene.

After Barclay swerved to avoid the cat, the vehicle veered off the shoulder of the road, and narrowly missed striking a telephone pole before returning to the road and rolling the vehicle completely over, said Searsport Officer Eric Marcel. The Subaru came to rest on its wheels.

The vehicle sustained damage to the front and back ends, as well as on the top and underside, Marcel said, and is deemed a total loss.

“He’s a very lucky man,” said Marcel. “It was an unfortunate situation and he’s lucky to live to tell about it.”
