Quirk Auto Group, Unity Foundation, UniTel, Inc. and the Orthopedic and Sports Physical Therapy Center of Waldo County General Hospital are the major sponsors of the third annual Waldo County YMCA Family Triathlon Festival.

The event will be Saturday, May 12 at the Waldo County YMCA.

The excitement of the festival is growing, said Sue Lapham of the YMCA. This year the event is adding music, featuring the band Odlaw, which will play live at the festival.

In addition, the event will have entertainment for youngsters with a bounce house sponsored by Belfast Pediatrics. Babysitting will be available, with the Senior Girl Scout Troop #521 providing childcare. Snacks and crafts will be provided with a suggested donation of $7 per hour per child. The troop is raising funds for a European trip next summer.

This year, the triathlon committee is adding to the event, Lapham said. The adult division will start with a group of 11- to 14-year-olds participating in the first wave of the swim and then running the same course as the adult division, but with shorter distances. This group will be timed with the same electronic chips worn by the adults, and, because their distances are shorter, they should be finished as the adults start to finish.

Additionally, the staff of the Orthopedic and Sports Physical Therapy Center will be on site the day of the triathlon to provide services including Kinesiotaping, stretching, therapeutic massage, heat and ice prior to and following the race. The OSPT Center specializes in treating patients of all ages with any orthopedic diagnosis and also provides services to athletes from middle-school age to adults.
