Daniel West, formerly a reporter for the Block Island Times in Rhode Island, has been named associate editor of The Republican Journal.

“Dan West brings to the table a mix of top-notch education and leadership experience,” said Courier Publications News Editor Daniel Dunkle. “He has moved to Belfast for this job so he will be a part of this community while offering fresh perspectives. I hope Waldo County will join me in welcoming him.”

West graduated from Boston University in 2009, where he majored in journalism and wrote for the daily student newspaper. A native of upstate New York, he broadened his experience with internships at a local news station in Albany, N.Y. and at a daily newspaper in Schenectady, N.Y.

After graduating from BU, West was hired as a reporter at the Block Island Times, a weekly newspaper. At the Times, West led the coverage of the development of an offshore wind project, while also covering the news of the small island community.

When the Times decided to use VillageSoup for its website, the publishers promoted West to web-editor to manage content on the site. While web-editor, West has used techniques unique to the internet to get the news out quickly.

When hurricane Irene swept up the coast, West wrote a live-blog that quickly became the community’s go-to source of information on the storm. He also worked to incorporate more video and multimedia stories to enhance the site.

West is new to Maine and to Belfast, but has spent some time in Waldo County over the years, making annual ice fishing trips to Palermo.

“I am new to the area and definitely have a lot to learn about the people of Waldo County,” West said. “But, I am excited to jump in and get busy editing such a historic newspaper.”

West is also looking forward to taking advantage of the Midcoast region. He says that one of his favorite things about Rhode Island was the quahoging and he hopes to take advantage of the wonderful shellfish that Maine is known for.
