Eight Midcoast masters’ swimmers contributed mightily to Maine’s win at the New England Masters’ Swim Championships March 16-18 at Harvard.

The eight set 16 new individual Maine records and three New England records in the process. They teamed with other Maine swimmers in five relays, all of which set Maine records, four of which set New England records, and one of which erased the United States record previously help by Walnut Creek of California.

The Harvard meet, with 887 entrants this year, is America’s second largest masters’ swim meet.

None of the local swimmers are national record holders as individuals. However, when Donna Edelbaum of Union and Bill Jones of Hope teamed with Ronnie Kamphausen of Phippsburg (and a multiple national individual record holder) and Hans Wendel of Hudson, Fla., they broke the national record in the 75-and-older mixed 400 medley relay. Wendel, formerly of Dover-Foxcroft, flew in for the event and to support his Maine team.

The same combo set a New England and Maine record in the mixed 200 medley relay.

Frank Giustra of Waldoboro joined Edelbaum, Jones and Kamphausen to set New England and Maine records in the 75-and-older mixed 400 and 200 freestyle relays. Their times were faster than the men’s records in the events. Giustra, Jones and Wendel joined 80-year-old Bill Reeve of Ellsworth to set New England and Maine records in the 75-and-older men’s 800 freestyle relay.

It was relay points that gave Maine the team championship. Other age groups did not have the happy, record-breaking combinations of the 75-year-olds, but they contributed to Maine’s massive relay points.

Kristi Panayotoff of Lincolnville and Susan Rardin of Belfast made up half of Maine’s New England championship 55-and-older mixed 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays; and of Maine’s 55-and-older mixed 400 medley and 400 freestyle relays that finished third.

Doug Roth of Warren swam down with the youngsters on Maine’s 18-and-older mixed 800 freestyle relay which, in spite of having a 50-year-old member, won the New England championship. Roth also swam on Maine’s 45-and-older men’s 200 freestyle relay, 35-and-older men’s 400 freestyle relay and 18-and-older men’s 400 medley relay which placed third, eight and seventh respectively.

Reed Lowden of Rockland swam the 55-and-older men’s 400 freestyle relay and the breaststroke leg of the 55-and-older men’s 400 medley relay, both of which placed third.

Of the Midcoast’s eight swimmers, only Drew Darling of Camden did not participate in relays; he was unable to return for the final three days of the meet after swimming a strong 1,650 freestyle. The distance events were March 10.

The Midcoast eight had outstanding individual performances too. The records tended to go to people who had just entered a new age group.

Roth, now 50, clipped more than three minutes from the state record in the 50-and-older 1,000 freestyle. Jones and Giustra, now 75, broke 11 of the 18 state individual records in their new age group.

Jones also broke three New England records and won the meet’s high-point trophy, losing only the 50 breaststroke to roommate Wendel. Although already in the middle of their ages, Edelbaum and Rardin each broke the listed Maine records in two events.

Records are not for everybody every year. Kamphausen, for instance, already holds most of the Maine and New England records, and four national records, in her age group. Panayotoff, in the middle of her age group, did not set new records but scored 209 individual and relay points. Her 178 individual points ranked her fourth among the 351 women competitors. Darling and Lowden, both of whom had to arrive late and leave early, were a critical part of an outstanding team effort, said Jones.
