Although weather postponed the event for several days, all involved had a enjoyable experience during the annual Special Olympics Knox/Waldo County Regional Track Meet held May 7 at Wasgatt Field on Thomaston Street.

There was a parade of athletes at the start of the day and the event concluded around 1 p.m. The event originally was scheduled for May 4 but rain and wet conditions forced the change.

Longtime event organizer Karen Matthews said there were 175 athletes, ages 5 to 71 from Knox, Waldo and Lincoln counties, who participated.

The meet has Knox and Waldo in the title because that is where a majority of the event participants come from, but there are competitors from Lincoln County schools in the Waldoboro area who also participate.

There were 18 teams from schools and agencies in the May 7 meet. Athletes participated in running events (50, 100, 200, 400 and 800 meters), walking events (10, 15 and 100 meters, and 1-kilometer) and wheelchair events (10-, 25- and 30-meter slalom), along with shot put, standing long jump and softball throw for field events.
