Six Belfast Area High School tennis players made the trek to the University of Maine in Orono May 12 for the Maine Principals’ Association state singles tennis Region 2 qualifiers in the hope of playing their way into the upcoming state tournament.

And of the six Lions who participated, only one roared on.

Junior Shashanna Moll knocked off her two opponents and qualified for the prestigious tournament, which will begin Friday, May 25 at Colby College in Waterville.

The state tournament goes on through that weekend, with the semifinals and finals slated for Monday, May 28.

On May 12, Moll bested Brewer’s Abbie Yoder, 8-2, in a pro set in the first round and Dexter’s Sarah Eastman, 6-0, 6-0, in the qualifying round to advance.

Moll also qualified for the state singles tournament last season.

The preliminary round and first rounds were pro sets, while the qualifying round consisted of traditional three-set matches.

Fellow Lions Carson Beck, Tyler Martin, Makaila Gould, Taylor Peabody and Liz McAvoy all participated in the state qualifiers, but fell short in their efforts to advance.

Moll defeated Yoder, Brew, 8-2 in the first round; and beat Eastman, Dex, 6-0, 6-0, in the qualifying round to advance to the state singles tournament.

Gould lost to Ashley Harding, Ellsworth, 8-2, in the first round.

McAvoy lost to Esther Adams, Deer Isle-Stonington, by default in the first round.

Beck defeated Erik Nytel, Dex, 8-3, in the first round; and lost to Sam Bolduc, Bangor, 6-3, 6-3, in the qualifying round.

Martin lost to Alexander Heilner, George Stevens Academy, 8-2, in the preliminary round.

Peabody lost to Nicholas Raye, Washington Academy, 8-4, in the preliminary round.
