They came, they vaulted, jumped, ran, hurdled and threw and, when all was said and done, Midcoast student-athletes — led by Camden Hills’ Caleb Pease’s remarkable firsts in three individual events — proved among the best of the best during the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference track-and-field championships May 26 at McMann Field.

The local athletes secured strong places, including nine firsts in the league championship meet.

Athletes, who had to reach qualifying standards to compete in the meet, from Medomak Valley, Oceanside, Camden Hills, Belfast and Mount View of Thorndike were among those who competed.

Remarkably, Camden Hills’ Caleb Pease again swept the sprint events, something he has done several times this spring in regular-season meets, but this time against the league’s top competition. His teammate, Ben Trapani, also swept the distance running events, namely the 1,600 and 3,200 meters.

Those local athletes who finished first were Camden Hills’ Caleb Pease (100, 200 and 400 meters) and Ben Trapani (1,600 and 3,200 meters) and Medomak Valley’s Jonathan Hendrickson-Belloguet (triple jump), Yannick Price-Prevot (discus). The Panther boys 4×800-meter and 4×100-meter relay teams also earned titles.

Waterville won the boys and girls team championships, but the local squads also made a run for titles, especially the Medomak Valley boys, who placed second, and both Belfast teams, which secured a pair of third-place finishes.

The girls team scores were: Waterville 237.5, Winslow 88.5, Belfast 50, Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield 49.5, Medomak Valley 36, Maranacook of Readfield 26, Erskine Academy of South China 25, Oceanside 24, Morse of Bath 22.5, Camden Hills 22, Leavitt of Turner 17, Nokomis of Newport 17, Gardiner 14, Mount View 12 and Lincoln Academy of Newcastle 6.

The boys team scores were: Waterville 147, Medomak Valley 89, Belfast 61, Camden Hills 61, Maranacook 43, Erskine Academy 40, Maine Central Institute 37, Nokomis 34, Mount View 31, Lincoln Academy 24, Morse 23, Winslow 20, Gardiner 18, Leavitt 16, Oceanside 2.
