As part of its “Summer Folk” activities, Penobscot Marine Museum is sponsoring a contra dance Saturday, June 16 at 7 p.m. in Union Hall, 1 Union St. Dances will be called by Chrissy Fowler, with music by the Belfast Bay Fiddlers.

Throughout the 2012 exhibit season, Penobscot Marine Museum is presenting exhibits and activities related to the history of tourism on Penobscot Bay. Derived from the English country dance tradition, contra dancing was adopted by New Englanders and became a popular pastime among summer visitors to the area.

All dances will be taught, and beginners and singles are welcome. Admission is $8, free for children younger than 12. Union Hall is upstairs in the town hall building.

Maine’s oldest maritime museum, Penobscot Marine Museum is home to outstanding collections of historic boats, photography, marine art and artifacts, ship models and 19th-century furnishings and architecture.
