Only one day removed from scoring a combined 24 runs in the divisional finals to advance to the Busline League softball championship game June 12, runs were at a premium between unbeaten Richmond Middle School and talented Troy Howard Middle School with both squads hoping to bring home the coveted league crown to their respective schools.

However, when the final out was recorded Tuesday at Great Salt Bay School in Damariscotta, it was the Bobcats, who have been on the prowl all season, celebrating in the center of the diamond.

The Bobcats jumped to a 3-0 lead and, despite a rally by the Lions to close within one run, the hosts held on and won the league championship with a 3-2 victory.

Richmond finished the season with an unblemished 14-0 mark, while Troy Howard’s year ended at 8-4.

Troy Howard, the second seed and North Division champs, defeated No. 3 Medomak 8th 11-9 and No. 4 Camden-Rockport (North) 16-12 to advance to the league final.

Richmond, the top seed and South Division champs, defeated No. 8 Camden-Rockport (South) 13-0, No. 5 Great Salt Bay (no score available) and No. 3 Oceanside 7th 8-0 to advance to the league final.

Richmond was named the host team at the neutral site by virtue of a coin flip.

Leading Richmond at the plate during the championship game were Autumn Acord (single), Camryn Hurley (single), Meranda Martin (2 singles), Kalah Patterson (single), Kelsea Anair (single), Sydney Tilton (single, double), Jade Gammon (single) and Taylor Paulison (single).

For Troy Howard, Breann Cummings (2 singles), Alexis Racioppi (2 singles) and Mariah Sturgis (single) paced the offense.

Sturgis pitched for the Lions, allowing 10 hits and three walks, with eight strikeouts. Martin also had a 10-strikeout performance for the Bobcats, allowing five hits and two walks.

Richmond jumped to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Acord drew a walk and scored on three passed balls. The Bobcats then took a 3-0 lead in the third when Hurley reached on a bunt and later scored, followed by Patterson crossing the plate later in the inning.

Troy Howard cut its deficit to 3-1 in the fourth stanza when Cummings crossed the plate on a wild pitch and Sturgis scored on an error in the seventh, to trim the visitors’ deficit to one run.
