The Rock Coast Rollers are ready to rumble — again.

In their second home bout of the summer season, the Midcoast’s derby girls are dragging an old grudge across state lines as they face the Upper Valley Vixens on Saturday, June 23 at 7 p.m. at the Midcoast Recreation Center.

Dubbed the “Solstice Slam,” the bout promises fans plenty of hard-hitting action against the Vixens, a rival from the hinterlands of New Hampshire and Vermont. Doors for the event open at 6 p.m.

Following a powerhouse performance on June 2 at MRC, the ‘Rollers are anxious to treat fans to another round of amazing athleticism, supersonic grace and gritty determination, all carefully balanced on four tiny wheels.

The thrills and chills can be had $5 per person, with children under age 12 admitted free.

Get ready to hoot and holler at the halftime show, where local entertainers kick up their heels for old-timey fun — wild-west carnival style. The after-bout party is at Waterworks in Rockland.

Tickets for the bout can be purchased at Rock City Coffee, Atlantic Baking Co., Good Tern Food Coop, Serendipity, Rising Tide and other local businesses, as well as from the league’s website at A portion of the proceeds goes to New Hope for Women, a local nonprofit that helps residents of Lincoln, Knox and Waldo counties create safer communities.

The Rock Coast Rollers league formed in early 2011 and is a member of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association. With the unfailing support of the fans, the women of RCR are going helmet-to-helmet with some of the best roller derby leagues in the northeastern United States and Canada, making a name for Midcoast Maine in a sport that is taking the nation by storm.

The league is looking for additional referees, track officials and volunteers, and encourages anyone interested in the sport to consider becoming a part of the fast-growing phenomenon of roller derby by joining forces with a positive, empowering, community-oriented team.
