DownEast Auctions has been commissioned to sell a rare 1802/1 $5 U.S. gold piece. The coin is owned by a family in Searsport, and has been graded by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) as AU 53. (Almost Uncirculated), a coin collector’s term for the condition of the piece. NGC has stated that only 15 coins of this date have been graded at AU 53.

Of the original 53,176 coins of this date minted, only a fraction still survive. The first year of mintage was 1795 for the Liberty-capped bust-style, and it continued until 1807. The coin is expected to bring $8,000 to $12,000 at auction. Mark Bradstreet, the auctioneer, is a life member of the American Numismatic Association. The coin will be sold during the Aug. 11 estate auction starting at 4 p.m.
