Lee DeCora Francis, author of the children’s book “Kunu’s Basket: A Story from Indian Island,” will read and sign her recent Tilbury House release Saturday, July 28 at 1 p.m. at Out of the Woods, 48 Main St. The event is part of the Belfast Bound Book Festival; for more information, call 338-2692.

Francis (Penobscot/HoChunk) comes from both the Penobscot Indian Nation in Maine and the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska. She is a teacher at the tribal elementary school located at the Penobscot Nation and lives on Indian Island with her family. The book, illustrated by Susan Drucker of Bowdoinham, tells of a contemporary Penobscot boy, Kunu, being encouraged to make his first basket by his grandfather, Muhmum. In the process, Kunu learns a bit of family and tribal history, and he learns about patience too.
