Friends of Belfast Parks seeks volunteers to help at the ninth annual Maine Wienerfest, a celebration of everything wonderful about dachshunds, which takes place at Steamboat Landing Sunday, Sept. 9, from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. The organization needs about 20 people to help with the many activities and tasks, and folks of all ages, from teenagers to seniors, are welcome to join the effort. Bring a friend or a spouse and have a good time.

Volunteers can sign up to help in a variety of ways, from greeting dogs and their owners as they arrive to selling tickets to various events, selling T-shirts and hats, and helping to stage the Grand Parade of Dachshunds, the Costume Contest and the Wiener Dog Races. Energetic volunteers to help crews with the early setup at 9 a.m. and the cleanup later in the afternoon are also needed.

Commitments for shifts of two hours are appreciated, though there are one-hour tasks as well, and several slots that involve sitting. Call Dale Kuhnert, volunteer coordinator, at 338-2160 or email dwkuhnert@roadrunner.com. For more info on Wienerfest, visit www.friendsofbelfastparks.org/weinerfest2012.html.

“This is one of the craziest and most festive events that takes place in Belfast each year,” said Kuhnert. “People come from all over Maine for the fun, and it’s beginning to attract lots of spectators and families, as well as dachshund owners. Last year upwards of 800 folks showed up!” Helping make this event run smoothly, he added, is also a great way to meet new people, support the local community (proceeds benefit the Belfast Dog Park), and make a memorable day in Belfast for lots of people who’ve never ventured here before.
